Got Math? (This is a program, not a question.)

If you are eligible for Elementary Algebra (MAT 022) or above, and enjoy working with children, we have the service-learning placement, volunteer opportunity or work-study job for you!

Young students in the Berkshires are struggling in math. Their scores on standardized math tests are much lower than their scores on tests in other subject areas. It has been shown that if third, fourth, and fifth graders do not develop appropriate math skills at these grade levels they will struggle in all areas of math for the rest of their lives. We want to help these young children now so they can succeed in the future.

BCC is trying to improve the odds for Pittsfield children. Got Math? is a program in which BCC students mentor elementary students in math. The students engage in fun activities that also raise the students’ understanding of math concepts. The purpose of these activities will be to raise both the competence and confidence of the elementary students in math. Many students just need a little extra time and encouragement to succeed in math and we want you to be the one giving it to them.

After running it for a number of years in Pittsfield Public Schools we have published a curriculum.
