Accommodations
The DSS office at BCC will help you to obtain reasonable
and appropriate accommodations to ensure your academic success.
However, you must initiate the process.
Procedure
This is the normal sequence of events in obtaining
academic accommodations.
- Student with a disability self-identifies need
for accommodations to a BCC faculty or staff member.
- Student is referred to Disabled Student Services
(DSS), office in the Student Development Center, next to the College
Store, in the Susan B. Anthony Center, room A-105, where the student
completes a Registration Form.
- A DSS staff member determines the need for academic
accommodations based on official documentation
of the students disability.
- A DSS staff member completes and signs the Request
for Academic Accommodations form. This form must be completed
every semester to continue services.
- The student receives and signs the accommodations
request form. (A photocopy is kept on file until the original
is returned to DSS.)
- The student submits the accommodations request
form to his/her instructor (s).
- If the accommodations are accepted, the instructor
signs the request form, keeps the pink copy, and returns the white
and yellow copies to the students.
- The Student returns the white copy to DSS for verification
of faculty signature and filing. The student keeps the yellow
copy.
- If the accommodations are rejected, the student
returns to the DSS staff member who completed and signed the request
form.
- The DSS staff member meets with the instructor
to work out a reasonable solution. The student may or may not
be present at this meeting.
- If a reasonable solution cannot be reached, the
DSS staff member takes the matter to the colleges Affirmative
Action/504 Coordinator.
- During the time the adjudication is in process,
the faculty member will allow the accommodation as recommended
until a solution is determined.
- The Affirmative Action/504 Coordinator meets with
the Disability Review Board to determine appropriate action.
