Disabled Student Services
The Disability
Resource Center (DRC) program offers students with disabilities
the opportunity to maximize their academic potential in the most
independent manner possible. It is the mission
and philosophy of DRC to promote empowerment, self-advocacy
and academic success.
Section
504 of the Rehabilitation Act and The Americans with Disabilities
Act provides equal access to education to students with documented
disabilities. In order to ensure that protection, students must
first self-identify and provide documentation
of their disability to DRC. Information obtained will remain confidential.
Reasonable and appropriate academic accommodations,
for testing and classroom settings, will be determined and based
specifically on the students disability. DRC provides support
services and will assist students with study skills training, time
management training, and the coordination of campus and community
support services. DRC also works closely with BCC faculty and
administration to ensure full programmatic access. In addition,
students transitioning from high school to college are offered informational
meetings.
DRC also offers students customized software applications
and specialized training in the Adaptive
Computer Lab. Adaptive computing is specifically designed with
modified hardware and software that is programmed to assist people
with physical and learning disabilities. Workshops and one-one instruction
are available throughout the semester.
