The Minutes of April 24, 2006, were
approved.
Don Pfeifer reviewed the membership of the committee
and the terms of membership. Effective October 31, the following
terms will expire: three faculty positions and one Student Affairs
position. Nomination forms for the open positions will be distributed
this week. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, October 4.
The Student Government Ambassadors will select two representatives
for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Program Change Proposals
Proposal 2006-5 Change in CIS degree programs
Originator: Gregory Panczner
This proposal is to remove COBOL courses (CIS 200 and 201) from
all requirements for the A.S. in CIS degree programs (Business Systems,
Computer Science and Networking). Computer Science with JAVA I and
II (CIS 231 and 232) should be listed as program requirements.

PED 165 Walking for Fitness I 1 Credit
Originator: Anne Fortune
Introduction to a walking exercise program designed to improve cardiovascular
health and overall fitness. Topics will include safe walking, walking
intensity and injury prevention. Students will develop individual
walking programs and participate in weekly aerobic exercise. A five-week
course.

ENG 2XX Children’s Literature 3 Credits
Originator: Heidi Tatro
The course is designed to provide the student with the theoretical
knowledge, history, and development of the genre in order to select
appropriate literature for children. This course fulfills three
credit hours of a literature requirement ONLY for students in the
Early Childhood Education Concentration.
Skills prerequisites: ENG 020 and ENG 060.
Recommendation: Six credits of composition.
The Committee voted to amend this proposal to
include a recommendation for six credits of composition.

CHM 2XX Independent Study in Chemistry 1-4 Credits

New Course Proposals
THR 106 Fundamentals of Theatre Design 3 Credits
Originator: Michael O’Brien
An introduction to theatrical design. This course focuses on creating
the visual and aural elements necessary for a live stage production
as well as cultivating artistic expression. Aspects include script
analysis, interpretation, research, and presentation. The course
will also include basic drafting and rendering techniques for the
different facets of theatre design.
Skills prerequisites: ENG 020 and ENG 060.

THR 209 Dramatic Literature I--Realism 3 Credits

An examination of significant plays and musicals that represent
the realistic and naturalistic styles of dramatic literature. Plays
will be studied in relation to their historical and cultural contexts,
theatrical styles, production and performance techniques.
Skills prerequisites: ENG 020 and ENG 060.

Add a sentence which states, “This course does not fulfill

An expansion on BIO 207. This course covers selected subjects of
bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, medical entomology,
and immunology. Topics chosen represent advanced concepts from medicine,
epidemiology, hygiene, microbial food technology, environmental
science, and ecology.
Prerequisite: BIO 207 or permission of the instructor.

New Course Proposals
MAT 051 Preparatory Mathematics for the Health
Sciences 3 Credits
Originator: Annette Guertin
An intensive refresher course in basic mathematics with introductory
algebra topics. This course prepares students for MAT 136 Mathematics
for the Health Sciences. Topics include fractions, decimals, ratio
and proportion, percents, solving linear equations and inequalities,
graphing linear equations, and operations on polynomials. College
credit will be awarded, but this credit will not count toward a
degree. This course is designed to meet the mathematics prerequisite
for MAT 136 ONLY and course enrollment is restricted to nursing
and health students whose program or program prerequisites require(s)
MAT 136.
Skills prerequisite: MAT 011, ENG 020, and ENG 060.

FIS 217 Fire Fighting Tactics 3 Credits
Originator: Charles Kaminski
An introduction to overall firefighting strategy considerations.
Students learn to formulate tactical objectives and methods based
upon contemporary knowledge of building construction, modern technology
such as automatic nozzles and thermal imaging, and current firefighting
techniques. Students learn to assess and develop tactics to manage
target hazards and special situations such as hazardous materials
and incidences of terrorism. Students learn procedures from pre-fire
planning activities through post-incident critique.
Skills prerequisite: ENG 060.
Prerequisites: FIS 101 and FIS 123.

MUS 249 Song Writing 3 Credits
Originator: Stephen Murray
A course in song writing for the professional musician. After analyzing
examples from a variety of folk, popular, jazz and art song anthologies,
the student will practice setting texts to music, writing melodies,
and creating accompaniments. Each student will write no less than
three songs during the semester, two with texts and one without.
Prerequisites: MUS 106; or basic music reading, notation and keyboard
skills; or with permission of the instructor.

THR 297A Special Topics in Theatre: Puppetry 3 Credits
Originator: Michael O’Brien
A survey of the genres, history, and cultural impact of puppetry
in the United States. The focus of the course will be on puppetry
art form and its practices in the United States during the late
nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course will examine the
genres, dramatic literature, history, cultural impact, manipulation,
performance, and construction techniques of puppetry.
Skills prerequisite: ENG 020 and ENG 060.

THR 297B Special Topics in Theatre: Basic Stage Rigging
3 Credits
Originator: Christopher Gregory
A course focusing on essential elements of stage rigging. Topics
of study include single purchase stage rigging systems, rigging
equipment, and their functions. Stage rigging safety will also be
covered.
Prerequisite: THR 102 or permission of the instructor

taught online using Blackboard, on whether the course should require
a writing prerequisite and an assessment of computer literacy, and
on where the two required meetings would be held.

THR 233 Movement for Actors 3 Credits
Originator: Andrea Borak
A movement course designed for acting students and theatre majors.
This course focuses on two distinct areas: musical theatre/jazz
dance technique and Rudolph Laban’s Effort Actions, including
an examination of their relevance to speech, character development
and stage movement.
Prerequisite: THR 104 or THR 105 or permission of the instructor.
The Committee voted to recommend approval of this course proposal.

Since the committee had not met recently, Don Pfeifer
reviewed the membership of the committee and the terms of membership.
Effective October 31, the following terms will expire: one Academic
Affairs position, four faculty positions, two Student Affairs positions.
Nominations for the open positions have been extended through Friday,
October 21, after which elections will be held. The Student Government
Ambassadors have appointed Kurt Jalbert as an SGA representative
for 2005-2006. There is still one SGA position to be filled.
Election of Chair
Annette Guertin was nominated to serve as chair of the Educational
Affairs Committee through October 31, 2005. A motion was made and
seconded to elect Annette Guertin Chair of the Educational Affairs
Committee.
The Committee voted to appoint Annette Guertin as Chair of the Educational
Affairs Committee through October 31, 2005.
The Minutes of September 27, 2004,
were approved.
Don Pfeifer explained that several proposals and courses
were given provisional approval during the work-to-rule action.
These proposals were forwarded to the Educational Affairs Committee
for action.
New Course Proposals
AHS 131 Orientation to the Musculoskeletal
System 2 Credits
Originator: Judith Gawron
Interactive orientation to palpation and knowledge of the structure
and basic physiology of the musculoskeletal system. Students will
be working with anatomical skeletons, lab partners, drawings, observation,
and lectures. Students will develop a working familiarity of bones
and bony landmarks, muscle origins, insertions and actions, and
joint dynamics. This course will include one hour of lecture and
two hours of hands-on supervised laboratory experience a week.
Prerequisite: High school biology or permission
of the instructor.

BIO 156 Living Anatomy: Functional Assessment
of the Human Body 3 Credits
Originator: Frank Schickor
A hands-on assessment of the human body. This course applies an
empirical approach to understanding anatomy. Based on identification,
recognition, and observation, the course deals with selected functional
aspects of the integumentary, skeletal, articular, muscular, nervous,
circulatory, digestive, and sensory system.
Skills prerequisite: ENG 020 and ENG 060.
Prerequisite: BIO 105 or BIO 101 with a minimum grade of C, or permission
of the instructor.

BSS 112 Introduction to Computers 1 Credit
Originator: Kathleen Gowdey
An introduction to computers. This course introduces beginning computer
users to the basics of computers. Students are introduced to the
operating system and various software programs used to create documents.
Students will also learn the basics of WebCT. This course is recommended
for those students who plan to take on-line courses.

FAS 138 The Art of Faux Painting 3 Credits
Originator: H.M. Saffer
An introduction to the techniques, materials, and history of faux
painting finishes and trompe l’oeil mural painting. Demonstrations
of various techniques will involve student participation. Students
will learn wood graining, marbling, textured wall surface application,
glazing, and trompe l’oeil techniques.

FIS 145 Fire Prevention, Codes
and Ordinances 4 Credits
Originator: Charles Kaminski
An overview of the organization and function of fire prevention
within the fire service. In addition, students study existing fire
and building codes and ordinances and their role in providing for
the public safety. Students examine the code development and adoption
process, code administration, and major code producing organizations.
Furthermore, students become familiar with national standards, especially
those contained within the National Fire Protection Associations’
Life Safety Code, its referenced standards, and the Building Officials
& Code Administration Building Code. Students also study Massachusetts
General Law, Chapter 148, and Code of Massachusetts Regulation 527,
and local ordinances.
Prerequisite: ENG 060.

PED 125 Indoor Cycling 1 Credit
Originator: Sherry Scheer/Tara Tranfaglia Romeo
An introduction to the philosophy and practice of indoor cycling.
Topics include bike setup, safety, heart rate monitoring and practical
cycling techniques.
There was discussion regarding a policy to have students
sign health waivers before participating in this course. A motion
was made to recommend that all students enrolling in this course
be required to sign a health waiver.

of the amended course proposal.

Proposal #2004-11 A.S. Fire Science
Originator: Charles Kaminski
Removes Introduction to Fire Protection/Prevention (FIS 121) as
a requirement and replaces it with Introduction to Fire Protection
(FIS 101). Adds the new course Fire Prevention, Codes and Ordinances
(FIS 145) as a requirement and reduces the FIS Electives requirement
from 15 to 12 credits.

Proposal #2005-1 A.S. Human Services –
Social Work Transfer Concentration
Originator: Audrey Ringer
Removes Contemporary Social Problems (SOC 208) as a requirement
and replaces it with a Specialized Elective approved by the Program
Advisor. Changes the required biology lab course from General Biology
I (BIO 101) to Fundamentals of Biology (BIO 105).

Proposal #2005-2 A.S. Fire Science
Originator: Robert Czerwinski
Spanish for the Workplace (SPA 131) is added to the list of options
for the FIS electives. The “FIS Electives” category
is renamed “Professional Electives.”

Proposal # 2005-6 Complementary Care

Removes First Aid (AHS-148) as a requirement and substitutes a new
course, Orientation to the Musculoskeletal System (AHS-131), in
its place. Also, replaces the ENG-101 requirement with an option
to take either ENG-101 or COM-104.

learning, stress and time management, conflict resolution, career
exploration, and interpersonal skills development. Pass/No Pass
grading.
P. Cookson agreed to amend the course proposal to include pass/no
pass grading.
The Committee voted to recommend approval
of the amended proposal.
A. Guertin shared that terms on the Educational Affairs
Committee will expire on October 31, 2004, for the following members:
Kathleen Gowdey, Andrew Howitt, Ellen Shanahan, and Margo Handschu.
An election to fill these positions will be held during the week
of October 11-15.

New Course Proposal
BUS 297X Special Topic: Marketing for the Tourism Industry 3 credits
Originator: C. Kaminski
An exploration of traditional and new marketing techniques for the
tourism industry, including service and non-profit cultural venues.
This course will cover an evaluation of traditional and new age
media marketing outlets and their relationship to creating brand
awareness through e-marketing tools, viral marketing, target marketing,
and niche markets for specific travel sectors with emphasis on creative
approaches.
C. Kaminski amended the proposal to include the prerequisite,
“BUS 107 or permission of the instructor.”

A study of the diverse musical genres of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the
Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, and other Caribbean
nations. No musical background required.

HUM 258 Modern Cuba Culture
and Society HU/hu 3 credits
Introduction to culture and modern history of Cuba through lecture
and discussions, literature, video, music, and dance. An overview
of the social evolution in Cuba from Castro’s rise to power
through the present. Examination of themes related to Cuba’s
present political isolation as well as potential for a market economy.
Exploration of effect on Cuban people of current U.S. and Cuban
government policies.
Prerequisite: ENG 101

T. Curley agreed with the Committee’s recommendation
that the catalogue description required modification.
With that agreement, the Committee voted to recommend
approval of this proposal.

HUM 258 Modern Cuba Culture
and Society HU/hu 3 credits
Introduction to the culture and modern history of
Cuba through lecture and discussions, literature, video, music,
and dance. The course provides an overview of the social evolution
in Cuba from Fidel Castro’s rise to power through the present.
Also examined are themes relating to Cuba’s present political
isolation as well as its potential for a market economy. The effect
of U.S. and Cuban governmental policies on the Cuban people is addressed.
Prerequisite: ENG 101

Lambert will serve one-year terms as Committee Chair and Committee
Recorder, respectively.
New Members: J.D. Bartow, Michele
Darroch, and Nancy Zuber were welcomed as new members of the Committee.
J.D. represents SGA and Michele and Nancy represent faculty.
Membership: The appropriate Dean
will forward the names of two individuals who will serve on the
Committee from their area: a one-year term (Academic Affairs) and
a two-year term (Student Affairs and Enrollment Services).

FAS 2XX Computer Illustration 3 credits
An introduction to Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard design
and illustration program. Topics include creating artwork and illustrations,
working with Illustrator and bitmapped imaging programs and files,
and preparing files for service bureaus, program providers, and
printers. Other topics include principles of visual composition,
form, space, perspective, and color.
Prerequisite: Experience with a Macintosh- or Windows-based computer
and FAS 111, or permission of the instructor.

HON 298D American Ethnic roots: Immigration
and Identity HU/hu 3 credits
America: a nation shaped by immigrants. In examining history, literature,
and popular culture, students will analyze how immigrants have impacted

allow students to draw connections between the course and the community.
Prerequisite: ENG 101 and twelve college-level credits completed
with a grade-point average of 3.3 or above or permission of the
Honors Coordinator.

Systems: Microsoft Outlook 3 credits
An introduction to personal information management using Microsoft
Outlook. This applications course covers the operation of the six
components of Microsoft Outlook: Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks,
Notes, and Journal. After completion of this course, students may
become Microsoft certified by taking the Outlook Microsoft Office
Specialist Exam.
Prerequisite: BSS 101 or CIS 102 or permission of the instructor.

A continuation of SPA 131. Complex grammatical structures are presented.
Students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
